Summer of Color: 2022 Mid-Year Floral Color Trends
Have you noticed the pattern this year? We all seem to CRAVE color!
The global pandemic, long hours spent indoors, and two years of social distancing have taken a big toll on our mood. We are tired of dullness and routine. We are over the limited occasions to “dress up,” go out or feel special. In 2022, as we welcome the sunnier days back into our lives, we are more ready than ever to experience summer in full color.
First, it was the Pantone color institute that created Very Peri, a unique and enchanting blend of cool blues and warm reds to inspire inventiveness, imaginative expression, and creativity. The beautiful shade is helping us embrace the altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.
The world of fashion followed, with Spring/Summer 2022 collections exploding with vibrant hues – bright fuchsia pink, royal blues that cross into periwinkle, kelly green, and sunny-burnt yellows. Now that’s a bright palette!
The interior design industry took the same direction and applied it to making our spaces brighter and more colorful with the goal of driving that mood meter up! Even a tiny adjustment by adding a pop of color could transform a traditional space into a happy place.
It wasn’t long until floral designers were on-board with the global movement toward color play full of vibrant possibilities. The sense of optimism is especially present in the floral design colors and textures this summer.
So it’s no surprise that we are seeing brighter and bolder floral choices when it comes to arrangements, installations, and decor. But even the choice of individual bouquets reflects the color trends of this summer. Let’s take a closer look at the patterns we are seeing.
Trend 1: Summer Citrus Superboost
After feeling mostly tired, the world needed a jolt of energy! And what better color than orange to help us supercharge our mental batteries?
We are seeing an endless array of citrus tones in the floral trends this summer, from rich oranges, deep corals, zesty yellows, tangy limes, and lavish golds. Balanced by neutral tones, these bright and energetic hues have a magnetic effect on our moods and spirits.

Trend 2: Contrasting Colors
Oranges and blues, pinks and greens, reds and purples – these are just a few of the contrasting combos making a splash this summer. We are seeing these “clashing” hues done artfully everywhere, from summer events to weddings to bouquets, and everything in between.
Florists are pushing boundaries by masterfully layering these bright hues and textures to create curiosity and wonder for our eyes.
So next time you can’t pick between two opposite colors on the color wheel, don’t settle for one or the other. Figure out a way to make them work together!
Trend 3: Epic Colorscapes
Is there such a thing as too much color? Not this summer, there isn’t!
The trend toward minimal design is taking a turn for the BRIGHT, with the clever and creative use of color to enhance simple design elements. Less is more with color!
Gypsophila is a perfect floral choice for this imaginative trend. It is easy to world with, adds a lot of texture and volume to any installation or arrangement, and offers an extensive choice of color options and combinations.
For the flawless transitions and a balanced look, use neutrals like soft ivories, nutty hues, and buttery creams as a more approachable alternative to true whites.
Trend 4: Cool Hype
Blending the calmness of blue with the excitement of red, inspired by Very Peri, lavender, purple, and violet hues have exploded in popularity.
This unique influence of cool and warm hues translates beautifully into floral creations, hence we decided to describe it as the “Cool Hype.”
The resulting designs are a real trip for the senses – creating a lot of hype because of their “cool” factor. See what we did there?
Trend 5: Follow the Rainbow
Why choose just one color, when you could have them all!
Rainbow florals are an explosive trend this summer, blending the brightest trends and taking design with color to new heights. And good timing, as June, is designated as the Pride Month, bringing awareness and celebration to the diversity within our communities.
And if it hasn’t already been one of the most vibrant summers, the Rainbow trend removes all remaining boundaries around color, floral types, and textures, and gives floral designs full freedom to create as their heart desires.
The message is very clear this summer and perhaps even the rest of the year – do not shy away from color! Embrace the bright hues and the sunny days and let your creativity run wild.
